Historical Background
Being the first major landscaped public park in America, Central Park carries a lot of history about New York City’s development. Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux planned it in 1857 after winning a design contest that they had organized with an aim of creating a haven for increasing population. This winning plan called “Greensward” turned this rough swampy land into today’s beautiful park.
Central Park construction was quite extensive that included thousands of workers laboring through huge soil and rock displacement processes. It began in 1858 and took almost fifteen years before its completion. The challenges were so many but Olmsted’s plan succeeded by blending man-made features into natural landscapes which gave rise to one harmonious natural park. Inception as a recreational spot commenced in 1876 when it became open to the public.
Since earlier performances of concerts there around the early twentieth century up to present day shootings of movies and even other sorts of entertainment involving masses have been enacted here (Ewing, et al.). Understanding its past will help you appreciate not just its beauty but also what it stands for. With its historical roots combined with such amazing scenery, Central Park has become a symbol showing how strong NYC can be during difficult times.

Walking around Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir as this gives a chance to enjoy breathtaking views of the skyline especially at sunset.
Boating on the Lake
One of the best ways to experience Central Park is by boating on its calm waters of Central Park Lake. Visitors can rent rowboats at Loeb Boathouse and paddle around it as they admire picturesque views. Sights and Attractions
Many legendary sights and attractions within Central Park epitomize the charm and cultural heritage of New York City.
Bethesda Terrace and Fountain
The terrace is often called the heart of Central Park. It was designed by Calvert Vaux together with Jacob Wrey Mould and has intricate carvings as well as the iconic Angel of Waters statue. Bethesda Terrace has two levels that are connected by grand staircases, giving a great view for pictures and a quiet place to sit. When you visit there, take some time to go up on top of the terrace from where you will see the fountain at its base; it extends towards another lake – this is so hypnotizing. This is one place where you can hear what Central Park is shouting.
Bow Bridge
An elegant 60-foot cast-iron bridge spanning the lake, Bow Bridge is one of the most scenic areas in Central Park. Photographers love it because of its gentle arches and ornate design while romantic people love visiting it for its beauty as well. Walking across Bow Bridge offers a serene moment, with reflections of trees dancing on water’s skin. Mesmerizes by the leaves framing the bridge like something out of a picture postcard.
The Central Park Zoo
Located in southeast corner of park, just past The Pond, Central Park Zoo is an ideal destination for families or anyone who loves animals. In addition to playful sea lions, there are snow leopards along with other species present here in this zoo. For children though, they have interactive exhibits at their own zoo section who want something more hands-on while exploring there favorite animals which range from giraffes all way up through elephants even before ending up with penguins too!
Besides watching sea lions being fed during feeding time – they’re very amusing to watch perform tricks- seeing those funny faces brings joy into everyone’s life especially when you know it is just but a small and well assembled zoo that gives one an opportunity to escape from the humdrum of the city.
Strawberry Fields and the Mosaic of Imagination
The park has a section called Strawberry Fields. It is 2.5 acres in size and was created to honor John Lennon’s memory after he died. There is an Imagine Mosaic there, which is a tribute to his peace vision that was placed near his home where he died tragically too. This serene place offers peace for thought.

Central Park is widely known for its famous attractions, but there are also some lesser-known corners that allow a closer contact with natural beauty and peace. These hidden gems can be especially interesting for people who wish to get off the beaten track of tourism.

Different scented flowers together with gentle buzzing of bees around them create an atmosphere perfect for silence or slow walking.
The Conservatory Garden
The only formal garden of Central Park is situated at Fifth Avenue and 105th Street – it is called the Conservatory Garden. The whole garden can be divided into three parts: French, Italian and English styles, each having its own peculiarities. Particularly impressive is the Italian part with symmetrical layout decorated by a lovely fountain at its center. All these places are well-groomed so they look very attractive but at the same time quietness reigns here among city noise.

If you want to feel like being far away from civilization without leaving New York City limits then come to North Woods located in the upper west side (northwest corner) of Central Park.
